    The number of LDL and other cholesterol-carrying particles circulating in the blood.
    Why it matters
    Particle count reflects arterial exposure more directly than total cholesterol, since a single particle can carry a variable amount of cholesterol. LDL-C can read normal while particle number runs high.

    The primary structural protein of HDL particles.
    Why it matters
    ApoA-1 counts the particles available to transport cholesterol away from tissue, a more direct read than HDL cholesterol alone.
