Detailed Body
Composition with
DEXA Scan

A 10-minute, low-dose X-ray that measures fat, muscle, and bone with clinical precision. DEXA is the gold standard for body composition — and a clear way to track whether weight loss is protecting lean mass.

Why DEXA Matters

Two people can weigh
the same. Their bodies
are entirely different.

BMI and body weight cannot distinguish fat from muscle. Two people can weigh the same and have very different body fat, metabolic risk, and treatment needs.

DEXA shows what your weight is actually made of — making decisions far more precise.

What a DEXA scan reports

Total Body Fat %27%
Separates total, subcutaneous, and visceral fat
Visceral Fat Area118 cm²
Fat around the organs — the highest-risk fat
Lean Muscle Mass49.3 kg
Lean mass by limb and trunk
Bone Mineral DensityT +0.3
T-score vs peak-age bone reference

Four Metrics That Matter

What your DEXA report reveals

Four numbers. One scan. Clear next steps.

Body Fat Percentage

Directly measures body fat — including subcutaneous and visceral fat — with ±1–2% accuracy.

Why it matters: metabolic risk

Visceral Fat Area

The fat around your organs. Strongly tied to insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk. Often concerning above ~100 cm².

Why it matters: visceral fat

Lean Muscle Mass

Tracks lean mass by region so you can monitor aging, training, and muscle loss during weight loss.

Why it matters: lean mass

Bone Mineral Density

Shows bone density with a T-score, helping catch low bone mass before fractures happen.

Why it matters: bone health

GLP-1 Weight Loss Programs

Weight loss on GLP-1
without DEXA is
flying blind.

The scale can't show what you're losing. In STEP 1, up to 40% of semaglutide-related weight loss came from lean mass; tirzepatide was about 25% in SURMOUNT-1.

Losing muscle slows metabolism and makes regain more likely. DEXA shows whether your plan is reducing fat while preserving lean mass.

~40%

Semaglutide lean-mass share in STEP 1

~25%

Tirzepatide lean-mass share in SURMOUNT-1

Learn About Our GLP-1 Program

How DEXA protects your GLP-1 results

01

Baseline before you start

Get a true starting point for lean mass, visceral fat, and bone density

02

Track what you're actually losing

Confirm fat loss vs. lean mass loss — the distinction that determines long-term success

03

Adjust the protocol

If lean mass is declining, your practitioner can modify training, protein, or dosing guidance

04

Document real progress

Fat loss, muscle gain, and visceral fat reduction — all quantified, not estimated

DEXA vs Everything Else

Why other methods
fall short.

Most alternatives estimate. DEXA measures.

BMI

Height & Weight

Cannot separate fat from muscle.

DEXA

Actual Tissue

Measures fat, muscle, bone, and visceral fat directly.

Bioimpedance (BIA)

Electrical Estimate

Hydration-sensitive and inconsistent.

Skin Calipers

Manual Pinch Test

Operator-dependent and misses visceral fat.

Who Benefits

A baseline for anyone serious
about their body

Useful far beyond osteoporosis screening.

GLP-1 Patients

Best before starting and during treatment to confirm fat loss, not muscle loss.

Longevity-Focused Adults

Annual tracking of lean mass, visceral fat, and bone density.

Women Over 40

Helpful for early bone loss and rising visceral fat during perimenopause and menopause.

Athletes & Performance

Shows whether training is building muscle and reveals regional imbalances.

Adults Over 50

Useful for tracking age-related muscle loss and sarcopenia risk.

Anyone Feeling Stuck

Helpful when the scale is not explaining your results.

Important Information

Body composition DEXA is different from a diagnostic osteoporosis scan. It is not meant to diagnose disease on its own. Radiation is very low (<10 microsieverts). Avoid during pregnancy and avoid contrast studies within 2 weeks.

This is an in-person service coordinated through Mend Medical in the Flagstaff area. HSA/FSA eligibility depends on use and ordering context. Formal osteoporosis screening is a separate indication.
